Don't Flush Those Meds! New Pharmaceutical Waste Disposal Site is Available for Residents Use

Residents are now able to safely and confidentially dispose of old and unwanted pharmaceutical waste in a special collection bin located in the lobby of the Thousand Oaks Police Department at 2101 E. Olsen Road. Drop-offs can be made during normal business hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. This site is not appropriate for the disposal of Business Waste.

Improper disposal of medicines hurts our community. Do not flush, trash, or ignore the medications in your cabinets. Studies from the U.S. Geological Survey indicate that 80% of the nation's waterways contain trace amounts of pharmaceutical wastes. While scientists are just now studying the potential effects on humans, there have been demonstrated negative effects on certain wildlife, such as fish.

Additionally, there are estimates from law enforcement personnel indicating that approximately 40% of the drugs abused by kids come from the home of a friend or relative. Expired medicine is considered hazardous waste.

Prepare for Disposal:
Please remove personal information from any medicines and leave in the container. Liquid medicines should also be placed in a sealed plastic bag to avoid accidental leaks. For the safety of staff, no sharps (needles) are allowed.

Pharmaceutical Mail-in Program:
For the elderly or disabled unable to use the drop-off container, the City will provide mail-in envelopes that are pre-addressed to a company licensed to accept and dispose of these materials safely. To request an envelope, go to www.toaks.org/GoGreen or call (805) 449-7283.
